Club Etiquette
Along the spectrum of extremely formal to very informal, our club is somewhere around the middle. While
we always seek to have fun with whatever we are doing in class, we do carry on traditional training values
and expectations, along with simple common sense. The below list of rules should be adhered to at all times
while in class.
- Do not criticize others.
- When entering and leaving the club, face the front and bow. (We bow to show trust and humility.)
- When entering or leaving the mat, bow.
- During class, any student wishing to stop practicing or leave the mat must first ask the instructor's permission.
- Never shout, curse, or become angry on the mat. If there is a disagreement, ask the instructor what is right.
- If the instructor is off the mat, treat the highest ranking student with the same respect you do to the instructor.
- Treat others as you wish to be treated.
- Call the instructor "Sir," "Mr.", or "Mrs."
- All students are expected to be in class on time.
- Bow every time you go back to your partner and start a new technique.
- If you show disrespect to the instructor, you will be asked to leave the mat.
- When the instructor first enters the mat in full uniform, the senior student yells "Attention!" Everyone faces the instructor and bows.
- Do not teach any forms. Forms are to be taught by Master Carrothers only.
Uniforms
During the summer hours (currently in effect as of June 1st) we are not wearing gi jackets due
to the heat. However, we are following strict guidelines on the t-shirts to keep in the spirit of
discipline throughout the summer months:
- Plain white t-shirts are allowed.
- Any plain t-shirt that is the colour of your belt or stripe is allowed.
- A t-shirt of any colour, as long as it has the Aiki crest, is allowed.
- Profanity or unsuitable slogans are not allowed. (When in doubt, don't wear it)
Full-length gi pants must still be worn.
